How to check disability status in Virginia?

After applying for Social Security Disability benefits in Virginia, one of the most common questions is:
“How do I check the status of my claim?”
Whether you applied for
SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income), staying informed is key to avoiding delays and ensuring your application moves forward.

Here’s how to track your disability claim status quickly and easily.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Use Your My Social Security Online Account

The fastest and most convenient way to check your disability claim status is through the Social Security Administration's (SSA) online portal.

  • Go to www.ssa.gov/myaccount
  • Create or log in to your “my Social Security” account
  • Click on “Check the Status of an Application”

You’ll be able to see:

  • The current step in the review process
  • Any recent updates
  • Whether the SSA needs additional documents
  • Estimated timelines for a decision

Tip: Make sure your contact information is up to date so you receive all SSA notifications.

2. Call the SSA Directly

If you prefer to speak with someone or if you don’t have internet access, you can call the SSA:

  • National SSA number: 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778)
  • Available Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your application confirmation number, if you have one
  • Your date of birth

3. Contact Your Local Social Security Office in Virginia

You can also check your status by contacting your local SSA field office in Virginia. Use the SSA's office locator tool on their website to find the closest branch.

When you call or visit:

  • Be polite but persistent if you’re not getting updates
  • Ask whether any additional documents are needed to move your case forward

4. Ask the Disability Determination Services (DDS)

In Virginia, the Virginia Disability Determination Services (DDS) reviews medical evidence and makes initial decisions. You may be able to get status updates from them during the early stages of your case.

However, DDS is not always easy to reach directly, so checking online or through the SSA may be faster.

What If You’ve Filed an Appeal?

If your case is in reconsideration or awaiting a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ):

  • You can still check the status through your SSA account
  • You’ll see updates such as “awaiting hearing” or “under review by judge”
  • For hearing cases, you may receive updates from ODAR (Office of Disability Adjudication and Review)
