Can I work while on SSDI in Virginia?

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in Virginia, you might wonder if you can work without losing your benefits. The good news is that the Social Security Administration (SSA) has programs allowing you to test your ability to work while still protecting your SSDI payments.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Understanding SSDI Work Rules

The SSA recognizes that some people receiving disability benefits may want to return to work but are unsure if they can handle full-time employment. To support this, they provide work incentives such as the Trial Work Period (TWP) and Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE).

2. Trial Work Period (TWP)
  • The TWP allows you to test your ability to work for 9 months within a rolling 60-month period without losing SSDI benefits, regardless of how much you earn during those months.
  • In 2025, any month you earn over $1,110 (before taxes) counts as a TWP month.
  • You continue to receive your full SSDI payment during these months as long as you report your earnings to SSA.

3. Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)
  • After completing your 9-month TWP, you enter the 36-month EPE.
  • During EPE, you can still receive SSDI benefits in any month your earnings are below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limit.
  • In 2025, the SGA limit is $1,620 per month for non-blind individuals and $2,700 per month for blind individuals.

4. What Happens If You Exceed SGA?

If your earnings exceed the SGA limit after the TWP:

  • Your SSDI benefits will be suspended for any month you earn above SGA.
  • If your income later drops below SGA during your EPE, your benefits can be reinstated without a new application.

5. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR)

If your SSDI benefits end because of work earnings, but you become unable to work again within five years, you may qualify for Expedited Reinstatement (EXR), allowing benefits to restart quickly without filing a new claim.

6. Important Considerations

When working while receiving SSDI:

  • Always report your income to SSA to avoid overpayments or benefit termination.
  • Keep records of your hours worked and pay stubs for accuracy.
  • Consider discussing your work plans with a disability attorney or representative to ensure you remain compliant with SSA rules.
